Toothache or Broken Tooth? What to Do
If you have a toothache, a broken or knocked-out tooth, or a lost crown, call the nearest Magnolia Smiles office as soon as it opens at 8 a.m., Monday through Thursday. Our offices in Magee, Purvis, Waynesboro and Wiggins, Mississippi treat dental pain, broken teeth and infections, including extractions when a tooth can’t be saved.
Go to the ER or call 911 if
Swelling makes it hard to breathe or swallow, or spreads toward your eye or neck
Bleeding won’t stop
You may have a broken jaw
What to do until you’re seen
Toothache: rinse with warm water and floss gently to clear anything stuck. Over-the-counter pain medicine can help until your visit. Don’t put aspirin directly on your gum.
Broken or chipped tooth: save any pieces, rinse with warm water, and hold a cold pack on your cheek to keep swelling down.
Knocked-out adult tooth: hold it by the top, rinse it gently, and try to set it back in. If you can’t, keep it in milk and get to a dentist right away.
Lost crown: keep the crown and bring it with you.

Dental emergency FAQs
What counts as a dental emergency?
Severe tooth pain, a broken or knocked-out tooth, a lost crown, or swelling in your gums or face. If swelling makes it hard to breathe or swallow, go to the nearest emergency room or call 911.
What should I do if an adult tooth gets knocked out?
Pick the tooth up by the top, not the root, and rinse it gently without scrubbing. Try to set it back in the socket. If you can’t, keep it in a cup of milk and get to a dentist right away, because the first hour matters most. Don’t put a knocked-out baby tooth back in.
How do I get an appointment for a toothache?
Call your nearest office when it opens at 8 a.m., Monday through Thursday, and ask for the next available appointment.
What if I have a dental emergency on a Friday or weekend?
All four offices are closed Friday through Sunday. Go to the emergency room for swelling that spreads toward your eye or neck, trouble breathing or swallowing, bleeding that won’t stop, or a possible broken jaw. For pain you can manage, call your office when it opens Monday at 8 a.m.
